The Interview

Interviewer already should have a copy of your CV and knows the basic details of your employment history

1.) Can you tell me what you did for Company XYZ?

This question does not mean for you to repeat your CV description but to use your own words to highlight 3 major job responsibilities e.g.:

  • I was in charge of the customer services division, which meant that I dealt extensively with client queries
  • I also assisted 2 staff and trained them to be efficient
  • And I submitted weekly reports to our Marketing Manager

2.) Why did you leave your last position?

Truth and honesty are crucial always as references will be checked and the real motivations will come to light.
Some answers which will be appreciated if they reflect your reality:

  • I felt I had more to offer. Managers were approached but there was no vacancy that suited my experience
  • With company takeover, my position was reduced to a clerical one with no challenges
  • I was going through a difficult time in my marriage and felt it best to resign and take time off to sort things out
  • Shift work and being available on demand cut heavily into family time. I am prepared to put in overtime when necessary but I also need predictable hours of work
  • Please note: Your reasons for leaving a job say a lot about your personality, your needs, your vision as a team player. While you cannot generalize, you still have to be true and human in the process

An often used expression for leaving a position is “Better Prospects”
Please qualify whether “better financial prospects” or drop that expression altogether

  • Remember: Companies hire staff but people hire people

When you come across as a real human being you evoke a similar response from your interviewer.

3.) What are you strengths?

This question will be posed to you in various ways i.e. What do you think you can bring to our company, or, what qualities do you have that will make this position a success, or, why should we hire you?

Your answer should always be two-fold

1. On a personal level e.g. :

  • I am reliable to complete a task A-Z
  • I am detailed and focused
  • I take responsibility seriously

2. On a skills level e.g. :

  • Accounting deadlines are crucial to me
  • I am totally au fait with the customs tariff book
  • Given the guidelines, I have always produced timeously and efficiently

4.) Can you tell us one of your success stories?
Think ahead about this question. We all have a success story to tell whether on a personal or professional level or both.

5.) What are your weaknesses?

Again, this question will be formulated in many ways – i.e. what areas you feel you need to learn more about, grow into, or, what can you improve on.
You cannot say “I have no weakness” as this will come across as arrogant and lacking self-awareness
