Shy people have difficulty in asking for things and getting ahead. The good news is that if you “fake it”, you can make it. Here are a few tips and tricks for making you feel more confident when you need to ask an all important question, like “Can I have this job!”

 

Posturing Confidence

 

Standing up straight and presenting yourself in your best light will make you feel bigger and more confident, ready to take on any challenge. Square your shoulders, lift your chin and put a real smile on your face. Dress comfortably but smartly.

 

Think positively

 

Thoughts carry weight. If you think – “I’m never going to …”- it won’t happen. So groom your thoughts in your favour. “I will”, “I can” - all positive thoughts that will make you feel like you can make things happen.

 

Speak positively

 

In the same way words carry weight. Always speak positive words. Avoid words like “sorry” and “can’t” in you speech. Using positive words will help reinforce your confidence.

 

Pace yourself

 

Deep breaths before asking a question can help the words come across slowly and clearly. It will help you not to feel nervous and stumble over what you want to say. You can even practice in the bathroom mirror to help you feel more at ease.

Failure is "in"

Failure is a word we all fear. To fail is the worst thing that can happen to one…but modern thinking is turning this concept on its head and looking at failure in a different light.

 

Failure as a concept

 

Researcher, Tina Seelig at Stanford University requires students to write a CV based on their failures and shortcomings instead of highlighting their achievements and strong points in order to recognise how these failures assist them with their growth and development.

 

Failure as a resume

 

Jeff Scardino, creative at Ogilvy and Mather, took this a step further. He created a CV which highlighted his failures, non-skills and bad references. He applied for 10 jobs, which he thought he was qualified to do, sending his regular resume and his “relevant resume” with different names and addresses.

We all know that failure can lead to success as Jeff’s experiment proves. Astounding growth and innovation can come from failure – so can you afford to conquer your fear of failure in such a dramatic way?

Taking risks is certainly a way toward rewards and success, but you may find that you have commitments to take such a huge leap as a “relevant resume”. The most crucial thing is to be unafraid of your fears, in order to make progress. To get the job, you need to make a good impression on your interviewer. The question is, what makes a good impression?

 

Here are a few tips to help you make a good first impression.

 

Carry yourself well

 

Carriage is important. Stand up straight. Walk with confidence. Slouching and shuffling is unbecoming and gives a bad impression.

 

Dress the part

 

Make sure what you wear is suitably smart. Add a dash of colour in the form of a scarf or a pair of earrings. Make sure your shoes are clean and comfortable.

 

Smile convincingly

 

You may be nervous or a little on edge. Giving a genuine open smile always puts people at ease when they first meet you. But remember smiling too much can make you appear nervous.

 

The handshake

 

A firm handshake denotes confidence. Make sure your hands are dry and nails are clean. No sweaty-handed handshake or limp-wristed action will give a good impression.

 

First words

 

Be concise when you speak. Rambles and ums and ah’s are out.  Say what you need to say clearly and to the point. Pronounce your words clearly. Tell of your most memorable achievements and awards.

 

Say Thank you

 

After the interview, ensure that you send a note of thanks to the interviewer for taking time to interview you.

 

 

Keeping all these tips in mind, you should make an indelible first impression.

 

When you can’t answer an interview question?

 

You have that all important interview and your nerves are frayed. What if the interviewer asks a question you can’t answer?

 

 

Don’t panic

 

 

The first thing is to remain calm. The minute you let the stress get to you, the worse it becomes. You start to sweat and your hands get clammy. Your heart is beating like a drum and you are sure the interviewer can hear it. Your brain gets muddled.

 

 

Breathe deep

 

 

Take a deep breath. Feel yourself calm down and allow yourself a moment to think of a coherent answer. Breathing deeply will allow your heartbeat to slow down and give your mind a “breath of fresh air.”

 

 

Ask for clarity

 

 

Ask the interviewer to clarify the question you can’t answer. Saying “I don’t know” or waffling some nonsense is not the way to go. Asking for clarity will give you time to think about the question in depth.

 

 

Show initiative

 

 

After asking for clarity and you still cannot answer, then explain what steps you would take to solve the problem in a real time situation. The interviewer will appreciate your honesty and your initiative. However if you still cannot answer the question, explain that you will research the answer after the interview.

 

 

Post interview follow-up

 

 

Be sure to follow-up with an answer as soon as possible after the interview to instil confidence in the interviewer of your ability to act upon your word and come up with solutions.

Writing a good covering letter

 

When applying for a job, your CV will speak volumes. A good covering letter will tweak the interest of your interviewer, provided you follow a few simple steps to ensure it fits the position. Using a generic covering letter just won’t make the grade.

 

Why are you the right person for the job?

 

In your covering letter, you have the opportunity to express why you think you are suitable for the job.

 

Be original

 

Let your personality shine out through your cover letter. Express what makes you unique and the right fit for the position.

 

Focus on the company

 

Remember to state what you can do for the company. Avoid focusing on yourself.

 

Covering letter length

 

The covering letter is just that – it is not a novel or an essay. Introduce yourself and the position you are applying for. Note the appropriate skills you have for the job. End the covering letter with an enthusiastic note on why you are excited about the position.

 

Grammar check

 

Most importantly, make sure there are no typos or grammatical errors in your covering letter.

Preparing yourself for your job interview

 

There are a few things that you should DO and NOT DO when preparing yourself for your all important job interview.

 

DO dress yourself appropriately

DO arrive a little early or at least be on time

DO have the number of your interviewer, just in case you get caught in unavoidable traffic.

DO have copies of your CV in a neat CV folder. (This should include a copy of your ID and certificates)

DO exhibit the right kind of body language.

DO the right preparation and research, and know what questions you would like to ask your interviewer about the company.

DO always send a note, thanking the interviewer for the opportunity of the job interview afterwards.

 

And of course there are the DON’TS

 

DON’T bad mouth your current or old job. (Present or past employers)

DON’T use bad language or slang.

DON’T be too relaxed and complacent.

DON’T talk about your problems and personal issues.

DON’T panic if you haven’t got an answer to a question.

DON’T lie about anything.

DON’T talk about money or company benefits, unless the interviewer does.

You’ve got that important job interview coming up and you are nervous.  You know that the interviewer is going to ask, “What is you weakness?” Are you anxious, bad tempered, impatient, depressed, flippant or given to idle chatter?

Give your weakness thought

You have got a bit of time to think about it. You know yourself. You know when you are performing optimally in the workplace and when you are not. Think about how to answer this question in an honest way. Being prepared is vital. Jot down a list of you weaknesses in preparation. Be careful of giving “generic” answers the interviewer has heard thousands of times before like, “I’m a perfectionist”

Be honest about your weakness

The best possible way to deal with the weakness question is to be honest, both with yourself and the interviewer. Of course, you do want to ensure that your answer will still keep you in the running for the job.

How do you handle your weakness

The answer you give about your weakness should also show how you have taken critique in the past and how you have taken steps to overcome the things that make you weak.

 

Keeping these tips in mind when you step into the interview will help you come across confident and self-aware.

Job scams

Is it a job scam?

 

When you find an advert that seems too good to be true, offers you a brilliant salary and allows you to start immediately without experience…be WARY. Most job scams are set up to make you feel like you have just stumbled on a great opportunity.

 

 

Scam identifiers

 

The first sign of a scam is that the text has errors and is badly written.

The email address from a job scam may not be an official company address.

If you have to pay a fee for any reason, it is usually a big indicator of a scam.

The scammer will contact you at odd hours.

The scammer asks you for personal details.

You are offered the job immediately, without experience

 

Protect your self against scammers

 

Don’t give anyone your personal details, unless you are sure it is a bona fide position.

Don’t pay anyone fees to register with an agency or for a training manual.

Keep you eyes open for too many spelling errors in the text.

 

Report scam job links

 

If you are unfortunate enough to be taken in by a scam or recognise a scam, be sure to report it immediately to save others the anguish of being taken in by the scam. Most sites have a report scam function…please make use of this feature to help keep scams off the internet.
